As food and fuel prices go up, more people seems to go for goods that last longer, like dried fish.
It’s a necessity. The low-income households prefer dried fish than fresh meat because it doesn’t spoil easily and even a small piece can be paired with vegetables to make a good viand.
The price is cheaper compared to fresh fish. Some dried fish dealers in Taboan Market makes about P50, 000 to P80, 000 in sales per day. Cebu dealers, however, may have to import more dried fish if the country’s fish stocks continue to dwindle. The fish supply also declines, particularly during bad weather.

Imported dried squid is also cheaper at P450 a kilo in comparison to the locally produced variety, which is at P480 per kilo.
Dried fish from Bantayan Island remains the best and the most sought-after variety. Lami ug sakto gyud sa timpla (It’s got the right flavor) most client says. It is a perfect combination with fried rice and tomato or with sukang labuyo. sarap kaau!
Dried fish dealers at Taboan have also turned their stores into one-stop Cebuano delicacy shops by selling otap, rosquillos, dried mangoes and even chorizo (native sausages).
The next time you visit Cebu, don’t forget to buy “pasalubong” at Taboan Publik Market where you can find the tasty variety of different kinds of dried fish.
